Calendar change: Students off November 5 for election day
In response to changes to Election Day protocols that hinder our ability to fully secure campuses during the voting process at schools serving as polling sites, the Canutillo Independent School District Board of Trustees has decided to suspend classes for students on Tuesday, Nov. 5.
At this point, the change in the calendar does not require a make-up day or an extension to the school year.
The District made this decision given rules about access to polling sites on campuses that prevents personnel from locking front doors or asking that visitors provide appropriate identification.
"The safety and security of students is of utmost importance for us, and if we can't dictate who has access to our campuses we do not want to take any chances," said Superintendent Dr. Pedro Galaviz. "By giving students the day off, we are taking the necessary steps to guarantee safety while still allowing the democratic election process to continue."
Please note that staff will remain in session. Campus personnel will have staff development during this day.
