Dr. Borrego Models High Quality Instruction, Sets Clear Expectations for Classrooms Across Canutillo ISD

Canutillo ISD Superintendent Dr. Josue Borrego is reinforcing his commitment to high quality instruction by working directly with district leaders this week to model effective classroom practices designed to support student success.

During a leadership session, Dr. Borrego led an exemplar lesson that demonstrated the instructional components expected every day in every classroom across the district. The lesson focused on clearly defined learning goals, multiple response strategies and demonstrations of learning, — all of which are designed to ensure students are actively engaged and able to show their understanding in meaningful ways.

Dr. Borrego emphasized that strong instruction begins with clarity and intentional planning. By establishing clear learning goals, educators help students understand what they are learning and why it matters. Multiple response strategies allow teachers to check for understanding in real time, while demonstrations of learning provide students with opportunities to apply knowledge and skills in ways that reflect deeper learning.

The session gave campus leaders a shared understanding of these instructional opportunities and allowed them to experience the strategies from a student perspective. Dr. Borrego noted that modeling instruction is an important part of building a strong instructional culture and ensuring consistency across classrooms and campuses.

“As campus principals, we continue to look for ways to help our students continue their tradition of excellence in education,” said Alderete Middle School Principal Nidia Avila. “Dr. Borrego is bringing with him strategies that highlight his experience. These will help us meet our academic goals and help students reach their full potential.”

Dr. Borrego expressed his enthusiasm for spending time in classrooms throughout the district over the past two weeks and seeing the high level of instructional practice already taking place. He said classroom visits are an opportunity to celebrate effective teaching, support educators and learn alongside students and staff.

Damian Elementary School Principal Maggie Castillo shared her excitement about implementing the strategies modeled during the session.

“We are eager to take these approaches to instruction and put them into practice on our campus,” Castillo said. “I am confident teachers will see the value in these approaches and that our students will benefit greatly from them.”

District leaders say the focus on instructional excellence aligns with Canutillo ISD’s broader goals of continuous improvement and student-centered learning. By grounding professional learning in practical strategies that can be immediately applied in classrooms, the district aims to strengthen teaching and learning across all grade levels.

“We are grateful to have a leader who is willing to coach while also being open to vulnerability and feedback on his own instruction,” said Associate Superintendent Dr. Debra Kerney. “We truly enjoyed collaborating with Dr. Borrego and look forward to the positive impact professional development opportunities like this will have on instructional alignment and student outcomes.”
